Context

This material is an addendum to the yet unpublished OTIR report #4. It can be considered standalone in the context of OTIR research, which deduces the presence of an all-encompassing, narrative-driven supernatural power behind the combined paranormal phenomena of this world.

Overview

When a subject of paranormal phenomena arises, there is always the secondary question: how can we use it?

It ranges from cautious attempts at simple interaction, where people try to provoke instances of phenomena out of curiosity or skepticism to confirm or refute them, to extreme claims of being able to shape reality itself by being partial to secret arcane knowledge and organizations.

Most of that seems to be nonsense, of course. However, a practical man, having encountered the phenomena firsthand, has to ask himself if there is indeed any instrumentality.

In OTIR report #4, we reach a deep understanding of the supernatural phenomenon’s involvement in this world, its nature, and the nature of the world itself. Let’s recap a few major observations that shape our understanding of the subject.

  • There is indeed a supernatural force beyond human understanding and control; it is external to humanity, numerous, and constantly present to this day — seemingly predating recorded history itself.
  • The force is conscious, and surpasses any human in that, singularly or collectively.
  • It is united and has no competition.
  • The force can observe human activity at will, while the opposite is only possible when it allows it.
  • It is able to interact with both mind and matter, surpassing known physical limitations when needed, and does so regularly.
  • The force is perfectly capable of understanding human communication and can respond, but prefers to do so at its own discretion — usually in a misleading, cryptic manner.
  • It enjoys hinting at its presence in various forms but prefers to keep its existence experimentally unprovable and improbable, relegated to fringe knowledge that is not taken seriously.
  • While the force actively intervenes in human affairs, it only makes its influence obvious in minor, insignificant matters, keeping its greater involvement hidden.
  • The force has an agenda that operates on both a macro and micro level — meticulously executed and intricately intertwined.
  • It controls the narrative about itself by posing as various entities and effects, making it difficult to perceive the full picture behind these masks.
  • It deliberately misleads contactees, presenting itself as opposing forces along the moral spectrum, each with seemingly different motives — yet all equally false.
  • Finally, the force is capable of predicting and shaping the future, either by stepping outside known spacetime boundaries or by calculating future events based on the sum of current conditions, allowing it not only to foresee but also to alter what is to come.

Following this, we can gain better insight into the nature of magical interaction, which can vary in appearance and tradition but ultimately falls into two major categories: mechanical and intermediary.

Mechanical magic

It can be seen as a way to directly control a natural force, harnessing some sort of abstract magical power from the ether or an untamed source, like the Earth itself — in other words, a raw mechanic. A lot of assumptions are required here, starting with the belief that such a thing is even possible. But even if we entertain this idea hypothetically and assume that someone could obtain the power or skill to harness raw energy and use it at will, this ability would become an unaccounted force rivaling the supernatural one itself.

Given the magnitude of this potential power, a sorcerer would be swiftly dealt with — if not outright prevented from existing in the first place. However, understanding the nature of what we are dealing with, we can conclude that this kind of ability was never meant to exist.

That may explain why, whenever we encounter claims of supernatural ability, we end up dealing with showmanship, sleight of hand, trickery, and deception — each unraveling upon closer examination. This should not be the case if mechanical magic were truly possible.

However, occasionally, we hear of a shaman or healer who seems to have some sort of confirmed effect. While it is never 100% reliable, it’s hard to deny a miraculous non sequitur when a late-stage cancer patient goes into full remission. These cases, I believe, are instances of narrative-building and signaling by the supernatural power. In such instances, the healer is not acting instrumentally but instead becomes an instrument used to reinforce a particular narrative — affecting the patient, those who hear about it, and even the healer himself.

The unreliability of these occurrences, combined with their premise contradicting the nature of the paranormal force, leads me to conclude that there is no such thing as true “mechanical magic” at all. In cases where it appears to exist, what we are actually witnessing is the following.

Intermediary magic

The second category of magic is “intermediary,” meaning that the act of supernatural influence is not performed by the person himself but by a greater power to which he appeals. This can take the form of ritual, prayer, sacrifice, contract, or many other methods.

It makes sense in our framework of thought, as this not only aligns with the force’s agenda but also creates a powerful reference point that reinforces various narratives, religious beliefs, personal storylines, and so on.

Some of these rituals involve a concept of paying a price, which is supposed to guarantee or increase the chance of success. Of course, from the standpoint of greater understanding, any sacrifice is actually pointless to the controlling power in all senses except as a means of removing value from the querent’s possession. This is similar to how TIs are deprived of income and savings to increase the duress of harassment. In this case, a significant sacrifice only serves to emphasize the event, which can be achieved by other means.

In any case, the real price of the ritual is meaning and effort, whether physical or emotional. Even then, it may have already been achieved — for example, when a withered TI asks for relief after a long period of grief. It is not a quantifiable variable, and both theory and experience show it is likely not a variable at all.

Those can be performative elements, like chanting or dancing in the style of a shaman; they can be specific decorations, like altars and rosaries; a place of meaning that must be reached specifically; or even a cut and spill of one’s own blood (which I don’t recommend, as it, in my opinion, has no advantages over literally anything else).

Some practitioners believe that the performative element is needed to bring the attention of higher powers, to amuse them, or otherwise attract them so they would hear the request and possibly honor it. Those with a deeper understanding are well aware that there is no need to get the attention of something that never takes its eyes off you — in fact, there is zero chance of escaping their gaze. So, that raises the question: why include it at all? Why can’t a desire simply be asked and executed, omitting the ritual? Or even without asking, why wouldn’t they just act on our hidden desires, well known to them?

Well, why not? Of course, they can — and sometimes they do. But the point here would be to create a feedback loop, a request-response connection that is undeniable and memorable for the querent, raising the significance and meaningfulness of the wish’s completion, lifting the veil just a little bit — exactly as the supernatural force prefers it.

As a result, this creates a point of reference for the querent that he can recall upon the wish’s completion. It makes a powerful confirmation and quite a shift in one’s perspective when the wish actually comes true. And this narrative value is one of the prime goals of the wish’s execution.

To conclude, with intermediary magic, we can achieve actual results, and while there are some caveats we are going to discuss, it is not at all as dramatic or scary as people once believed or prefer to pretend.

The rest of the article explores the practical application of intermediary magic, breaking down the process and analyzing the best ways to use it.
